How to Add a Countdown Timer to a Video

   Match the clock to the occasion

   Flip Clock fits a launch or an event door time. Ring Timer fits quizzes and challenges. Starting Soon is a whole stream panel with a headline and progress bar. Deadline Boxes show days, hours, minutes and seconds for a sale, and Visual Pie Timer suits a classroom activity.

   Set the numbers and words

   Flip Clock, Ring Timer and Starting Soon take From and To in seconds, and Clock format offers seconds, mm:ss or hh:mm:ss. Title says what the clock is counting toward. Deadline Boxes use Labels for their units. Font, Weight, Size, Text color and the three colors apply across the category.

   Decide if it runs in real time

   From and To are spread across the clip, so 60 to 0 over Flip Clock's 15-second default runs four times too fast. Set Duration equal to From for true seconds. Visual Pie Timer and Hourglass Timer have no From: their time is the clip length, up to one hour.

   Export for the clip length

   All but Exam Timer start transparent. WebM with alpha suits OBS, CapCut and web pages. A PNG sequence writes one image per frame, which suits a short timer in Premiere Pro or After Effects. For a timer of many minutes in those editors, set a solid background and export MP4.

   Place it in the show

   In OBS, add the WebM as a media source in your pre-show scene, above the background. In Premiere Pro, import the first frame with Image Sequence ticked, then right-click the clip, choose Modify, then Interpret Footage, and enter your export frame rate so seconds stay accurate.

  A five-minute Starting Soon panel running on a holding scene before a live stream, with the Subtitle telling viewers to grab a drink and the bar showing how much wait is left.

• Workout videos

  A follow-along workout with HIIT Interval Timer filling the frame, its color field switching between WORK and REST so people can read the phase from across the room.

• Classrooms and exams

  A teacher projecting Exam Timer during a mock paper, with a large calm clock and a banner that flashes at the 5-minute and 1-minute marks.

Three tips that make it look intentional

• Match the export duration to the countdown so the clip ends on zero.
• Use a ring for streams and a flip clock for launches.
• Add your own label under the timer to say what happens at zero.

Three things people get wrong

• Running a real-time countdown in a clip people will watch later.
