How to Add Animated Captions to a Video

   Pick a caption style

   Karaoke Pop is the default for talking-head clips, since each word pops as its turn comes. Box Highlight stays readable over busy footage because a solid block sits behind the active word. Typed Caption suits tutorials and storytimes, and Bounce Caption suits vlogs and comedy.

   Paste the line

   Put up to 160 characters in Text. Items per screen sets how many words share a page. Set Case, Font, Weight and Size, then Accent for the active word, Primary for the block in Box Highlight, and Outline with Secondary for the stroke that keeps white text legible on bright shots.

   Match Duration to the voice

   Timing comes from the clip and not from your audio: pages share the clip equally and each word gets an equal slice of its page. So time the spoken sentence, enter that as Duration, up to 30 seconds, and export one clip per sentence. Position and Block width handle layout.

   Export over nothing

   Captions start transparent, and they should stay that way. WebM with alpha works in CapCut and in Resolve on most systems. For Premiere Pro or After Effects, export a PNG sequence, since neither opens WebM without a plugin. MP4 cannot store alpha, so it would cover your footage.

   Lay them down sentence by sentence

   In CapCut, split the voiceover at each sentence, import the matching WebM onto an overlay track and slide it until the first word lines up. If a line drifts, re-export it with a longer or shorter Duration. In Premiere Pro, bring in the frames with File > Import and Image Sequence.

  A founder or coach speaking straight to camera in a vertical clip, with a four-word Karaoke Pop block sitting above the lower part of the frame that the app's own interface covers.

  A software tutorial with Typed Caption restating each instruction as the narrator says it, so viewers following along silently at work can still keep up with each step.

• Storytime and comedy

  A comedy storytime where Bounce Caption gives the punchline a physical landing, and a single Accent color pulls attention to the word the joke turns on.

Three tips that make it look intentional

• Three to five words on screen at a time is the sweet spot.
• Put the caption block above the platform's own UI, not under it.
• One highlight color, used only on the word you want stressed.

Three things people get wrong

• Placing captions in the bottom fifth of a vertical video, where the platform puts the username and the caption text.
• Showing a whole sentence at once, which removes the word-by-word rhythm that keeps people watching on mute.
• Using a thin weight. Captions are read at arm's length on a phone in daylight.
