Animated captions: keep viewers watching on mute

Updated September 18, 20263 min read

Why do short videos need animated captions?

Most social video is watched without sound, so captions carry the message. Word-by-word styles also hold attention by giving the eye something to follow, which lifts retention on Shorts, Reels and TikTok compared with a static subtitle block.

Captions are the highest-leverage motion graphic in short form. These presets pop each word, highlight a box, type a line and bounce phrases, in your font and your accent color.

Five captions & subtitles presets to start from

Hover any card to play it. Opening one loads it in the editor with every control unlocked.

  • Each spoken word pops and changes color as it is said. The retention-winning caption style for Shorts and Reels.

  • A solid color block slides behind the active word. Bold, readable captions that survive any busy footage.

  • Captions type themselves out with a blinking cursor, perfect for tutorials, storytimes and tech explainers.

  • Words drop in one by one with a springy bounce and a slight tilt. Playful captions for vlogs and comedy edits.

  • The whole line rides a gentle wave while the spoken word glows through a color gradient. Musical and smooth.

  2. 02Make it yoursRewrite the text, set your brand colors and font, adjust easing and duration, and switch the aspect ratio for the platform you are posting to.

Which format should you export?

Use MP4 when the clip sits on its own track or fills the frame. Use transparent WebM whenever it has to float over your own footage: the alpha channel is real, so no keying or blend mode is needed.

Three tips that make it look intentional

  • Three to five words on screen at a time is the sweet spot.
  • Put the caption block above the platform's own UI, not under it.
  • One highlight color, used only on the word you want stressed.

Frequently asked

  • Audio Visualizers

Audio visualizers: turn a podcast clip into something watchable

Export an audio visualizer preset, place it over your artwork or video, and lay your audio underneath in your editor. Spectrum bars, waveforms and pulsing orbs give a static episode clip the movement social platforms reward.

  • Countdowns & Timers

Countdown timers: build urgency without a stopwatch

Pick a countdown preset, set the starting time and format, choose the colors, and export at the exact duration you need. Flip clocks, ring timers and deadline boxes all count down in real time, so the clip length matches the countdown itself.

  • News & Broadcast

News graphics: tickers, breaking banners and headline bars

Use a ticker preset, enter your headlines, set the scroll speed and colors, and export. A breaking news banner and a headline bar cover the rest of a bulletin look, and transparent exports let them sit over your own footage or a studio plate.
