How to Animate Spirograph and Math Curve Backgrounds

   Pick the curve family

   Spirograph Bloom gives an ornate rosette that suits a slow, elegant opener, with a 15 second default. Lissajous Trace is simpler and leaves more room for type. Flow Field looks organic rather than geometric, so it works when the video is about nature or data rather than maths.

   Adjust line and detail

   Count changes how much line or how many points make up the figure, and Thickness sets how heavy the line looks. Density and Speed change the pace. Variation gives another version of the same curve. Tree and fractal presets such as Koch Snowflake Bloom also have Rotation.

   Compose around the figure

   Most of these curves are centred, so in 16:9 the sides stay open for a title beside the figure, while 9:16 leaves room above and below it. Every preset loops, so choose a Duration from the pace you want, not the length of the scene, then repeat the clip.

   Export MP4 at the delivery resolution

   These work as full-frame backdrops with their own background colour, which makes MP4 the right format. Thin lines lose the most from upscaling, so export at the resolution you deliver, up to 8K, instead of enlarging a smaller file in the editor. Reserve a transparent export for lines laid over footage.

   Use it under a title

   In Final Cut Pro, import the MP4 and drop it into the primary storyline, then connect your title above it. Duplicate the clip along the storyline to extend the background, since the end joins the start. A slight dim on the clip keeps thin lines from competing with the type.

Where it is used

• Music visualisers and album clips

  A Harmonograph Decay or Spirograph Bloom loop plays full frame behind a track title for a music upload that has no footage, giving the listener slow motion to watch for the song's length.

• Maths and science channels

  Phyllotaxis Spiral, Chladni Plate and Dragon Curve Fold illustrate the actual idea being explained, so the visual doubles as a teaching aid while the narrator walks through the equation or pattern.

• Meditation and ambient videos

  Flower of Life Lattice or Maurer Rose, slowed down in calm colours, holds the screen through long guided sessions where any cut or flash would pull the viewer out of it.

Three tips that make it look intentional

• Frequency ratio is the strongest control on a Lissajous or spirograph: small whole-number changes redraw the figure completely.
• Longer trails read as light painting, shorter trails read as a moving object; pick one and commit.
• These sit well behind titles because the motion is continuous and never flashes.

Three things people get wrong

• Raising the frequency ratio until the figure turns to noise. The readable shapes are at the low whole numbers.
• Running the curve at full brightness behind type. Drop the opacity or darken the palette and the headline survives.
• Exporting a single cycle and looping it in the timeline. Set the duration to cover the scene and let the preset close the loop for you.
