How to Add an Animated Border to a Video

   Match the border to the shot

   Corner Brackets give a viewfinder look around an interview or a product, without enclosing it. Border Chase suits a picture-in-picture box, because the line draws itself around the edge. Neon Outline belongs on music, gaming or nightlife edits, and Film Strip on old photos and throwback sequences.

   Adjust the line

   Corner Brackets take Primary, Thickness, Inset and Easing. Border Chase adds Secondary for its second stroke and Corner radius for the turns. Neon Outline has Primary and Secondary for the two colors it pulses between, plus Intensity for its glow and Variation for a different flicker.

   Choose ratio and length first

   The border is built for the aspect ratio you pick, so choose it before tuning Inset. Defaults are 2 to 3 seconds and any preset can run to 60. Corner Brackets and Border Chase animate out at the end, so set Duration to the shot instead of stretching the clip later.

   Export with the middle open

   Four of the five start transparent. Neon Outline ships on a near-black fill, so switch its Background to Transparent if footage has to show inside it. Use WebM with alpha for OBS, CapCut or Resolve, and a PNG sequence for Premiere Pro or After Effects, where WebM will not open.

   Stack it over the footage

   In DaVinci Resolve, drag the frames folder into the media pool, then place the clip on the track above your footage. If you see separate stills, right-click the pool and toggle Show Individual Frames. In OBS, add the WebM as a media source above the webcam.

• Webcam inserts

  A rounded Border Chase drawn around a webcam box on a screen-share tutorial, so the presenter reads as a separate panel and not as a hole cut in the slides.

• Quote and photo inserts

  Documentary or explainer sequences that cut to an archive photo or a pulled quote, with Film Strip edges or brackets telling the viewer this is inserted material and not the live scene.

• Product close-ups

  Corner Brackets breathing around a watch or a phone in a product ad, marking the object the voiceover is describing while the rest of the shot stays visible.

Three tips that make it look intentional

• Inset the frame from the safe area so nothing is lost on a phone.
• Animate the frame in, then hold it: a constantly moving border is exhausting.
• Match the stroke width to the weight of your titles.

Three things people get wrong

• Choosing a frame thicker than the shot can spare, which crops the subject you framed it around.
• Animating the border on a loop so it draws attention away from what it surrounds.
• Exporting at 16:9 and reusing it on a vertical cut, which stretches the corners.
