How to Add Cartoon Effects to a Video

   Pick the punchline

   Cartoon Smoke Puff covers an entrance or a vanishing act. Comic POW Burst and Impact Frame land a hit. Anime Speed Lines build drama around a reaction, and Heart Eyes or X Eyes Knockout sit on a face. With 46 presets, start from the emotion you want and not the shape.

   Set color and outline

   All 46 share Primary, Secondary, Accent, Outline, Scale, Rotation, Position and Variation. A new Variation redraws the same effect differently, so two puffs in one edit do not match. Six presets take text, such as Comic POW Burst and Speech Bubble Pop, with Title, Font, Weight and Text color.

   Keep it short and place it

   Defaults run from 1 to 4 seconds with a limit of 15, and most run 2 seconds or less. Use Scale and Position for rough placement, Rotation to match the subject's angle, and leave final positioning to your editor, especially for eye effects, which must sit on a real face.

   Turn the background off

   Every cartoon preset starts on a dark solid fill, so switch Background to Transparent before exporting anything that goes over footage. Then choose WebM with alpha for CapCut or Resolve, or a PNG sequence for Premiere Pro and After Effects. MP4 keeps the fill, so it suits a full-frame gag only.

   Land it on the frame

   In CapCut, import the WebM to an overlay track and align its start with the frame of impact, then resize it over the subject with the handles. In Premiere Pro, import with Image Sequence ticked, set Interpret Footage, and add a sound effect on the same frame.

• Reaction comedy

  A reaction clip that drops a Sweat Drop or Anger Vein beside the creator's face the moment something awkward happens, the same way anime marks a character's mood.

• Fight and sports edits

  A sports highlight or a staged fight scene with Impact Frame on the hit, Ground Crack Impact on the landing, and Motion Streak Dash on the run-up.

• Children's learning videos

  A kids' lesson using Idea Light Bulb when a question is answered and Magic Sparkle Trail when a new object appears, keeping attention without changing the footage itself.

Three tips that make it look intentional

• Land the effect on the frame of impact, not after it.
• Fewer frames than you think: cartoon FX are punctuation.
• Thick outlines survive compression on social platforms.
